Tragedy Shows Urgency of Worker Protections

The collapse of an eight-story factory building near Dhaka shows the urgent need to improve Bangladesh’s protections for worker health and safety. Reforms should include a drastic overhaul of the government’s system of labor inspections and an end to government efforts to thwart the right of workers to unionize.

“Given the long record of worker deaths in factories, this tragedy was sadly predictable,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “The government, local factory owners, and the international garment industry pay workers among the world’s lowest wages, but didn’t have the decency to ensure safe conditions for the people who put clothes on the backs of people all over the world.”

The Rana building collapse is the latest in a long list of factory building tragedies in Bangladesh, Human Rights Watch said. In April 2005, 73 garment workers died in a factory collapse in Savar. In February 2006, 18 workers were killed in a garment factory collapse in Dhaka. In June 2010, 25 people were killed in a building collapse in Dhaka. In November 2012, more than 100 workers died in a fire at a factory in Dhaka.

1. President Obama signed the ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ into law. This bill effectively bars federal courts from halting the sale or planting of genetically modified (aka GMO) or genetically engineered (GE) seeds. No matter what health issues might arise concerning GMOs in the future.

2. A bill that targets transgender people was approved by an Arizona House panel. It shields businesses from civil or criminal liability if they ban people from restrooms that don’t match their birth-assigned sex.

3. Kansas lawmakers got closer to passing a new law that will discriminate against people living with HIV or AIDS by forcing them to be ‘quarantined’.

4. Rapper Rick Ross came under fire for the following date-rapey rap lyrics: “Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it… I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.” Meanwhile, over 1200 women in the U.S. were raped. And approximately 3 were murdered by intimate partners.

5. Approximately 35,948 Americans were arrested, taken to jail and booked. The relative majority of them were arrested for nonviolent drug crimes. They were disproportionately Black and Latino.

6. Around 2,000 queer youth around the country became homeless. That’s a conservative estimate.

I have to be honest with you.
When I watched Perks of Being a Wallflower, I cried my eyes out.
Four times, in fact.
I think it was because I identified so strongly to some of what Charlie feels (and how accurately Logan Lerman portrays it).

I was disappointed they didn’t include the Poem.

Then I flipped through the special features afterwards and found it. All was well with the world again.

Highlight of my spring break? Absolutely.
I don’t know if that’s a good thing.
